THERMALLY INDUCED TRANSITION IN THE VORTEX LATTICE OF Ge / Pb MULTILAYEi

چکیده

We report on a novel magnetic field dependence of the critical current density of M.B.E. grown Ge/Pb insulator/superconductor multilayers. When the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the layers, the critical current density Jc drops to a minimum, followed by a broad maximum before finally decaying monotonously to zero with increasing magnetic field. The dependence of this effect on pinning strength, temperatu~, and layer thickness suggests either a thermally driven coupling/decoupling transition, or melting of the ~ortex lattice.

Viscoelasticity and surface tension at the defect-induced first-order melting transition of a vortex lattice

We show that thermally activated interstitial and vacancy defects can lead to first-order melting of a vortex lattice. We obtain good agreement with experimentally measured melting curve, latent heat, and magnetization jumps for YBa2Cu3O72d and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8. The shear modulus of the vortex liquid is frequency dependent and crosses over from zero at low frequencies to a finite value at high fre...

Dynamics of Topological Defects in Electroweak Theory

Embedded defects proposed long ago (Z–vortices and Nambu monopoles) have been successfully searched for in 3D equilibrium lattice studies within the standard model near the electroweak phase transition and the crossover (which follows it for realistic Higgs mass). Gauge independent lattice–vortex operators are proposed. Vortex condensation (percolation) is found to characterize the high–tempera...

Vortex properties of two-dimensional superconducting Pb films.

Using low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) we have investigated the vortex behaviours of two-dimensional superconducting Pb films at different thicknesses. STS at the vortex core shows an evolution of electronic states with film thickness. Transition from the clean limit to the dirty limit of superconductivity is identified, which can be ascribed to the decrease...

Joule heating induced by vortex motion in a type-II superconductor

We present experiments that determine the temperature increase in a type-II superconductor due to Joule heating induced by vortex motion. The effect of Joule heating is detected by comparing the response of the vortex lattice to fixed amplitude current steps of short ~10 ms! and long ~4 s! duration, where the Joule heating is negligible and saturates, respectively. The thermometry is based on t...
